Quest Charter Academy is excited to be able to provide a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus for students in the Peoria area. All students engage in activities and content that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills in a collaborative environment. Students learn to work together in small groups to analyze data and situations that have a real-world focus. Ultimately, all content areas are integrated in STEAM education, focusing not only on math and science, but also language arts.
Students at Quest have numerous opportunities to establish connections between the classroom, the neighborhood, and the larger Peoria community. Many businesses provide resources for our students with classroom speakers/guests, tutoring, field trips, mentors, extra curricular club support, and donations to support STEAM education focusing on science and technology equipment.
At the middle school level, the focus is on an awareness of STEAM fields and occupations. All students are able to explore STEAM related careers through the national Gateway to Technology program (GTT). This program is a hands-on way to begin to explore computer science and engineering activities working in small teams. Students learn the basic design process used in the small group collaboration problem solving. Students will learn to design a robot for a specific purpose and building the robot.
Why is STEAM Education so Important?
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEAM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that, during the period 2008-2018, employment in science and engineering occupations will grow by more than double the rate for all occupation. Quest has an obligation to the students in Peoria to prepare them fully for these future jobs.
