Quest Charter Academy is excited to be able to provide a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focus for students in the Peoria area. All students engage in activities and content that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills in a collaborative environment. Students learn to work together in small groups to analyze data and situations that have a real-world focus. Ultimately, all content areas are integrated in STEAM education, focusing not only on math and science, but also language arts.
Students at Quest have numerous opportunities to establish connections between the classroom, the neighborhood, and the larger Peoria community. Many businesses provide resources for our students with classroom speakers/guests, tutoring, field trips, mentors, extra curricular club support, and donations to support STEAM education focusing on science and technology equipment.
At the high school level, students are provided a challenging and rigorous curriculum related to STEAM pathways and occupations. Students are able to explore engineering in-depth with the national Project Lead The Way program (PLTW). Students learn the engineering design process while applying math, science, and engineering standards in hands-on projects that include designing a new toy, building the strongest bridge, or designing and building a robot. Students will learn the fundamentals of programming and computational-thinking skills and apply to a real world application.
Why is STEAM Education so Important?
“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEAM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that, during the period 2008-2018, employment in science and engineering occupations will grow by more than double the rate for all occupation. Quest has an obligation to the students in Peoria to prepare them fully for these future jobs.
